Lake County sheriff says area’s drug problem is bad; may propose millage

BALDWIN — If the number of blocked pseudoephedrine sales is any indication, Lake County seems to have a bit of a drug problem.
Pseudoephedrine is used in popular cold medicines like Sudafed, but it’s also the primary ingredient used to cook methamphetamine.
A couple years ago, the state of Michigan created a system that required pharmacies to track how much of the ingredient they sell and limit purchases to those they suspect are using it to produce meth.
According to a report presented to the Michigan Legislature by the MSP Methamphetamine Investigation Team and Michigan Intelligence Operations Center, in 2016, Lake County had the highest percentage of blocked sales in the entire state, with pharmacies refusing 10.2 percent of all potential purchases.
