Attorney General Bill Schuette heading anti-meth awareness campaign

Attorney General Bill Schuette has partnered with state Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, and other associations to kick off a statewide anti-meth awareness campaign.

The initiative stems from a 2011 law sponsored by Proos to better protect against a process known as “smurfing,” where people purchase cold and allergy medications such as Claritin-D and Sudafed that contain pseudoephedrine to make methamphetamine.

That legislation made Michigan one of the states participating in the NPLEx system, an electronic logging system used by law enforcement to track sales of over-the-counter cold and allergy medication, and limited the amount of pseuoephedrine products that people can buy.
