NPLEx Continues To Block Illegal Sales Of Medicines Containing PSE In Illinois

Illinois State Representative John Bradley (D-117th District) Tuesday released information from National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx), the state’s real time, stop-sale pseudoephedrine (PSE) monitoring system. During the first and second quarters of 2016, in Illinois, the NPLEx system blocked the sale of 54,290 boxes of PSE — totaling 126,001 grams — from potentially being used illegally.
NPLEx is an important resource for retailers that blocks the potential illegal sale of cold and allergy medicine containing PSE, such as Advil Cold and Sinus and Claritin-D, at the point of sale. Illinois, along with six other states, bans the sale of medicines containing PSE to known meth offenders entirely. Police are also able to use NPLEx to proactively identify and arrest meth criminals and then use the information provided in the prosecution and conviction of those who use the medicine in the production of meth.
“Stopping meth production is a goal of everyone in the legislature in Illinois,” said Representative Bradley. “NPLEx, along with the meth offender block list helps strike an ideal balance of targeting the criminals who make meth but also allowing access to law-abiding citizens. The success of these laws is very apparent but we must continue to focus on the threat of meth coming from Mexico, which across the country has increased as domestic meth production has declined.”
