Local pharmacy and state lawmakers combat meth ‘smurfing’

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) – A Memphis-based pharmacy is joining forces with Tennessee lawmakers for an anti-meth campaign.

Fred’s Pharmacy and local lawmakers are trying to put the burden where it belongs … on meth criminals.

Brenda Henderson learned the dangers of meth when a home blew up across the street in 2013.

“It was pretty disturbing,” Henderson said.

The incident sent Ryna Vuth’s 3-year-old daughter to the hospital. Vuth was jailed on meth charges.

Henderson said she’s never heard of smurfing.

Memphis-based Fred’s Pharmacy wants everyone to know what smurfing means and we’re not talking about those cute little blue guys.

“Going in and purchasing an allergy or cold medication that contains pseudoephedrine on behalf of a methamphetamine criminal,” explained Fred’s Pharmacy District Manager Matt Wilson.
