Tennessee law enforcement was given a reason to smile recently: The number of meth labs seized in the state has dropped by 40 percent, according to the Tennessee Methamphetamine and Pharmaceutical Task Force.
However, the fight against meth is far from over. Mexican drug cartels are expanding their presence in America’s meth underworld, importing the Mexican-made product into our country, according to a recent Associated Press story.
The downturn in homegrown labs in Tennessee is a testament to the hard work of our police forces and their partnerships with local retailers. Tennessee pharmacies use point-of-sale technology to track sales of cold medicines that can be illegally used to make meth. This system has blocked the sale of more than 92,000 grams of those medications so far this year.
