Prosecutor taking steps to thwart meth manufacturing, “smurfing” in Genesee County

Have you ever heard of “smurfing?”
If not, you probably aren’t alone.
“Smurfing” refers to the illegal purchase of over-the-counter (OTC) cold or allergy medicines containing pseudoephedrine (PSE) for criminals who seek to manufacture methamphetamine in the area.
Meth manufacturers also pay a number of different people to buy as much of the medicine as they can, to avoid laws that limit the purchases.
