Letter: Police are reducing scourge of meth in Illinois

This week, May 15-21, is National Police Week, an important time for us to show our support for our local law enforcement officers. A particular area of importance to us in which the police play a vital role is stopping methamphetamine production in Illinois. Meth has poisoned our communities for far too long, tearing families apart and bringing nothing but heartache to everyone it touches.

Luckily for us, our police officers are committed to using every tool available to stop criminals who try to make meth. One incredibly helpful tool is the National Precursor Log Exchange, which is a real-time stop-sale system used in every pharmacy which records the sale of certain over-the-counter cold and allergy medicines that contain pseudoephedrine, an ingredient used by criminals to produce meth. NPLEx rejects the sale of these medicines to anyone who has exceeded their limit and — here is where law enforcement comes in — catalogues the identities of suspicious purchasers so police have suspects to investigate.
