LTE: PSE Restrictions Unnecessary

A story recently reported on the massive amount of drugs coming into our country from Mexico and cited a new government report which said that 99.8 percent of all methamphetamine seized in the United States in 2015 was seized at the southern border.

I found this interesting because of proposed legislation to restrict the sale of cold medicines, like Sudafed or Claritin-D, that contain pseudoephedrine (PSE.) The idea behind the legislation is to restrict the availability of PSE because it can be used by criminals to cook meth. However, since our government seems to have proven that the source of all of our country’s meth is Mexico, then it seems like PSE restrictions are unnecessary and don’t work toward stopping meth at the source.
